🌧️ 200 Dpi Vs 300 Dpi Scanning

Dpi measures the density of pixels contained within a span of 1 inch of an image. The more concentrated the pixels within each inch, the higher the dpi or "resolution". 200dpi simply means an image displays 200 pixels within a 1 inch width or height. Another way to think of it is 200 pixels crammed into a square inch of space.
With printed images, we must pay close attention to resolution to ensure we get a high-quality print. For web images, we must focus on the pixel dimensions. Look at the two images below - one is 300ppi and the other is 72ppi. (Pixel Dimensions 300 x 200; Resolution 300ppi) (Pixel Dimensions 300 x 200; Resolution 72ppi)
By changing the resolution of the scanned image from the default setting of 200 dpi to 75 dpi, the file size becomes smaller and takes less time to download. When viewing the scanned image on a computer screen, no difference in image quality is evident between a 200 dpi image and a 75 dpi image.
The pixels are smaller, and the jaggies on the line edges are much reduced. Line art is a special case. If you have a 1200 dpi printer, you could scan Line art at 1200 dpi (could, not necessarily should, 300 dpi often looks fine). Correspondingly the same for 600 dpi, 300 dpi, and 180 dpi printers, scan line art at those numbers.

Conclusion: 300 to 600 dpi. For resolutions below 300 dpi,a the scanner loses information. This makes 300 dpi a minimum setting for music that musicians will read. If your scan will be archived to sites such as IMSLP, the expectations are higher. As of July 2017, IMSLP: Scanning Music Scores specifies 600 dpi, and IMSLP: High Quality Scanning
